Solar Hot Water for your home geyser

 Heatpump Geyser Heating

Flat Plate Solar Panel Collectors are the oldest technology. They are also the most commonly used throughout the industry. This mainly due to the simplicity, in manufacturing the collector locally. Any person with a basic technical knowledge and gas welder can put something together in less than a day. This is not to say that it will be an efficient panel.

Flat-plate collectors heat the circulating water to a temperature considerably less than that of the boiling point of water and are best suited to applications where the demand temperature is 30-70°C

Flat collectors can be mounted in a variety of ways, depending on the type of building, application, and size of collector. Options include mounting on a roof or free-standing.

The technology used when manufacturing flat plate collectors has evolved over the past 10 years putting them in a similar class to that of an Evacuated Glass Tube Collector, providing they have the following characteristics.

  • Copper Riser Tubes are used

  • Copper Header Tubes are used

  • Copper Absorber Fins are used which must be ultrasonically welded to the riser tubes and not riveted or spot welded.

  • Spectrum Absorber Coating must be chromed black and NOT spray painted

  • Insulation Material 50mm fibreglass cotton

  • Glass 4mm cover pattern tempered glass, transmission >92%- this ensure infrared rays spread across the copper riser tubes effectively

With the above materials used for the collector the optimal performance absorption will be +- 95% with an emission (re-radiation) of +- 5%.
Hi Temp offers the above flat plate solar collector which is CE approved and SABS compliant.

There are 3 installation options we offer for the

flat plate solar collector system.

Option 1:

Retrofit Pumped Split System using Photovoltaic Panel and 12 volt circulation pump- this is when the customers’ existing geyser is used and adapted to use solar.

The flat plate solar collector is mounted on the roof and connected to your existing Kwikot or equivalent geyser. The water is circulated through the flat plate solar collector using a 12 volt pump and photovoltaic (PV) panel to power the pump. As soon as there is sun on the PV panel the pump begins to circulate the geyser water through the flat plate solar collector. No timers are required. The existing heater element is used as a back-up should there be no or little sun for a few days continually.

The above system will cost R7499* installed, including the homeowners rebate.

What Is Included?

  • 2sqm Flat Plate Solar collector

  • 12 volt circulation pump

  • 10 watt Photovoltaic solar panel

  • Auto vent Valve

  • Non-return valve

  • 5.5m copper tubing and lagging

  • Installation *

Note: This solar “set-up” is suitable for a 150l or 200l geyser. For households with higher hot water usage we recommend and additional flat plate collector which will cost an additional R3500.

Option 2:

Retrofit Pumped Split System using 220 volt circulation pump and intelligent solar controller- this is also when the customers’ existing geyser is used and adapted to use solar.

The flat plate solar collector is mounted on the roof and connected to your existing Kwikot or equivalent geyser. The water is circulated through the flat plate solar collector using a 220 volt pump and an intelligent solar controller. The intelligent solar controller manages the entire geyser heating process. Sensor probes are used to monitor the geyser water temperature and flat plate solar collector temperature. The existing heater element is also controlled and can be pre-set to various heating times throughout the day, as a back-up.

The above system will cost R8499* installed, including the homeowners rebate.

What Is Included?

  • 2sqm Flat Plate Solar collector

  • 220 volt circulation pump

  • Intelligent Solar Controller

  • Auto Vent Valve

  • Non-return Valve

  • 5.5m copper tubing and lagging

  • Installation *

Note: This solar “set-up” is suitable for a 150l or 200l geyser. For households with higher hot water usage we recommend and additional flat plate collector which will cost an additional R3500.

Option 3:

Thermosiphon Solar System: This is when the new solar geyser is mounted higher than the flat plate solar collector and uses natural convection to circulate the water.

The flat plate solar collector is mounted on the roof lower than the new solar geyser. The water is circulated through the flat plate solar collector using natural convection. The water is circulated throughout the day providing there is sunlight on the flat plate solar collectors. A backup heater element is present should there be little or no sun continually for a few days.

The above system will cost R11499*(150 litre solar geyser) or R12499*(200 litre solar geyser) installed, including the homeowners rebate.

What Is Included?

  • 2sqm Flat Plate Solar collector

  • 150 or 200 litre new solar geyser

  • 5.5m copper tubing and lagging

  • Installation *

Note: For households with higher hot water usage we recommend and additional flat plate collector especially when a 200 litre solar geyser is used. This will be an additional R3500.
